Summer Wildflowers - Black Eyed Susan

This extremely common, if not the most common, wildflower is also the state flower of Maryland. The winner of the Preakness Stakes (major horse race in Baltimore) receives a blanket of chrysanthemums around their neck decorated to look like black eyed Susans because they aren't actually in season at that time. Common names include Brown-Eyed Susan, Brown Betty, and Yellow Daisy, among others. It is also believed to have multiple medicinal uses in several Native American tribes. It blooms late summer into Autumn and prefers full sun. They can last up to 10 days as a cut flower but left outside will attract butterflies.
