Spring Wildflowers - Scarlet Pimpernel

My research in identifying the numerous flowers that grow here led me to this interesting one. The flower, not the play of the same name, is not native to Texas nor the United States! It is native to Europe, West Asia, and North Africa, yet has been found worldwide. It has several common names including Poor Man's Weatherglass (it opens it's petals when it is sunny and closes when rain is due), Shepherd's Barometer, Red Chickweed, and a few more. It is a low growing, small annual with a long history of having medicinal uses. It was believed to be a cure-for-all and was widely available because it apparently grows like a weed in it's native lands. There is an old saying that states, "No heart can think, no tongue can tell, the virtues of the pimpernel." So, although this is not native and I don't have a whole lot of it, I thought it was an interesting flower!
